Cracker Start to the Gamefishing Season!
It has been quite a few years since good numbers of yellowfin have been seen in New Zealand waters. So right quite rightly Kiwi anglers are fizzing at the bung at the moment about the return of these awesome gamefish!
A very nice patch of water turned up off the Bay Of Islands just before Christmas. It sounds like most fishos that managed to get a line wet while others were enduring the Christmas rush had some very good luck, with epic yellowfin up to and over the 80kg mark hitting the scales. The NinePin trench seems to have been a real hot spot for them.

Since then, and with more anglers on the water the yellowfin catches have been quite widespread with the back of the Aldermen Islands (500m-1000m), Waihau Bay and the Garden Patch accounting for plenty of yellowfin captures.

The first marlin turned up on the West Coast on Boxing Day and at 142kg it was a biggie for early on in the season, a good indication of a cracker season ahead with the fish following plenty of bait here.
Tutukaka has been a real hotspot. Neil on MV Destiny managed to go 3 marlin for the day North of the Poor Knights on 30 December. Pretty crazy fishing for so early in the season, it is shaping up to be a cracker!
Nice stripey being released on Destiny
Impressive weigh board at Tutukaka for early in the season
